Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 22) — Vice President Leni Robredo is willing to work with anyone, including Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, should they secure the country’s highest posts this upcoming election.
Robredo’s spokesperson Barry Gutierrez told CNN Philippines’ The Source on Tuesday that while they are working doubly hard to ensure that running mate Sen. Kiko Pangilinan will also win the hearts of their supporters, they acknowledge the different configurations that could come up during voting day.
“The Vice President has also been very clear. Regardless of who is elected and of course, right now, we are doing everything in our power to ensure that that will be Sen. Kiko Pangilinan who will take his oath as vice president come June 30 of this year,” Gutierrez said. “But regardless of who gets elected, she will be willing to work with the person who the people choose as the vice president.”
Gutierrez was also asked to react on the recent endorsement of congressmen Joey Salceda, Rufus Rodriguez, and Zamboanga City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco of a Leni Robredo-Sara Duterte tandem through their so-called “ROSA” movement.
“Given their record of service in government they might have a different style but at the end of the day, both of them have proven that they have what it takes to actually perform as public servants,” Gutierrez said of Robredo and the presidential daughter.
“I don’t think there will be a problem. Being a vice president, after all, to a large extent, means being able to find a niche where you can be most effective,” he added.
“The Vice President has been very open to the idea that whoever gets elected as the next vice president, if it’s Mayor Sara then it’s Mayor Sara. She will work with her to find a niche where she will be most effective in contributing her own talents and her own experiences to government,” Gutierrez said.
He noted that while Mayor Duterte is allied with the current administration, the two women can find common ground.
Robredo herself stressed in the past that she would not do to the next vice president what she has experienced under the Duterte administration. She said she is even willing to give that person a big role in the government for the greater good of the country.
Other groups have also expressed support for Mayor Duterte’s tandem with another presidential hopeful, Mayor Isko Moreno.
Mayor Duterte is currently the running mate of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. They are the tandem to beat based on surveys of preferred presidential and vice presidential candidates this year.
