Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) launched the Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program (TFETP) to expand the recruitment of foreign English teachers and teaching assistants in primary and secondary schools.
Per the Taiwan National Immigration Agency records, there are 193 Filipino teachers in Taiwan as of 2021, according to a recent news release from the Department of Labor and Employment.
Bienvenido Cerbo Jr., Philippine Overseas Labor Office-Taichung Labor Attaché, recently visited several public elementary and secondary schools, as well as cram schools (test preparation centers), in Central Taiwan and encouraged principals to hire more Filipino teachers.
In 2022, the MOE will open 450 teaching positions in public schools to foreign English teachers in order to create an English-speaking environment for primary and secondary students while also improving the English teaching skills of local teachers.
The TFETP is in line with Taiwan’s goal of having English as a second language by 2030 and expanding student opportunities.
The monthly salary for English teachers in the program begins at NT$62,720 (approximately PHP115,122.25), plus a travel allowance, health insurance, and other benefits.
The salary will be determined by the teacher’s highest level of education and years of full-time teaching experience.
To be eligible, applicants must be fluent in English, have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and have no criminal record. It is not necessary to have a state-issued teaching license or credential.
