Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 9) — The low-pressure area east of Visayas has developed into a tropical depression named Agaton, the country’s first tropical cyclone for 2022, the state weather bureau said on Saturday.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the weather system developed around 2 a.m. and was last located 125 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
It was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph. It was moving slowly west, northwestward.
Meanwhile, Eastern Samar in the Visayas; and Dinagat Islands, Siargao Island, and Bucas Grande Island in Mindanao are under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.
PAGASA said these areas may experience rains with gusty winds. Residents are warned of possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to at times heavy rains.
The bureau said Agaton is forecast to remain almost stationary or move slowly as it meanders over the waters east of Eastern Visayas. It added that a landfall over the coast of Eastern Samar is possible.
Agaton is expected to intensify into tropical storm in the next 24 hours.
By Tuesday, PAG-ASA said Agaton may weaken again into a tropical depression and may degenerate into a remnant low by late Tuesday or early Wednesday as the tropical cyclone begins to circulate.
The state meteorologists said that Malakas is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday.
