Sara Duterte Says She Leaves Davao City as PH’s 8th Richest

-

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said Thursday she was stepping down as chief executive of Davao, with the city as the country’s eighth richest, as she campaigns for the vice presidency.

Citing the Commission on Audit’s 2020 Annual Financial Report released last year, Duterte-Carpio said Davao City had accumulated P23 million in assets, ranking eighth among all cities in the country.

“I leave you with a city buoyed by a stronger economy and citizenry with programs and services institutionalized to ensure continuity,” Duterte-Carpio, the first female mayor of the city, said in her valedictory address on Thursday.

The eldest daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte also took pride in Davao City’s ranking as the fourth most competitive highly urbanized city in the country, the highest for any city outside of Metro Manila.

Duterte-Carpio took over the leadership of Davao City in 2016 when her father was elected president. She was reelected for a second term in 2019.

Despite calls for her to run for president to succeed her father, Duterte-Carpio slid to run for the vice presidency and gave way to her running mate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the Philippines’ late dictator.

The Marcos-Duterte tandem dubbed “UniTeam” has been leading pre-election surveys with their campaign centered on unity.

“I have been called to join the race for a bigger challenge. This is a challenge that gives me the opportunity to spread my wings wider, to soar higher, and reach new heights with the support of our fellow Filipinos for our beloved country,” Duterte-Carpio said.
