Rock formation collapses onto boats killing at least 10 people, 32 are injured

MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL – A massive rock formation collapsed on top of three boats in Brazil, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more in an incident captured on camera and shared on social media.

According to the New York Daily News, Brazilian police have confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday near Furnas Lake in the Brazilian city of Capitolia in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

According to Edgard Estevo, chief of the Minas Gerais State Fire Department, up to 20 persons may be missing, and officials are working to identify them. Many of the injured, he claimed, had been released from the hospital by Saturday night.

A massive section of a cliff can be seen tumbling into the water at a major tourist site along the Rio Grande river, directly on top of numerous boats, as horrified bystanders screamed in the footage released on Twitter. Furnas Lake was formed in 1958 as part of the construction of a hydropower facility.

As per Estevo, the catastrophe happened between the cities of Sao Jose da Barra and Capitolio, from whence the boats had set out.

According to the Brazilian news portal G1, firemen believe the rocks became dislocated and fell into the river due to a rapid rainfall of rain. Helicopters and divers were dispatched to assist in the search and rescue efforts.

At least 32 individuals were reportedly injured, and each boat involved was carrying 12 to 20 passengers, including children.

Rovilson Teixeira, who has worked in the area for six years, told OTempo in Brazil that he has never seen anything like it.
