Vice President Leni Robredo campaigned for legislation on Wednesday that would raise the age of statutory rape from 12 to 16 years old.
"Priority ko na iangat to 16 years old ang age of sexual consent. Anumang anggulong tingnan, bata yung 12 years na nasa batas ngayon," Robredo, a presidential aspirant, wrote on Facebook.
Because minors are vulnerable to exploitation, Robredo believes that pushing for a law to raise the age of sexual consent is critical.
"Ang bata, napupuwersa, nako-coerce ng mas matanda, at traumatic experience na kailangan pang I-prove na statutory rape ang pinagdaanan ng ganun kamurang edad. Dapat baguhin ito," Robredo said.
After the Senate ratified the bicameral conference committee report on the legislation, the law to raise the age of sexual consent to 16 years old just requires President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) pushed lawmakers to enact the bill because the Philippines’ existing sexual consent age is the “lowest in Asia” and one of the world’s lowest.
