Philippines inks $369-million missile deal with India’s BrahMos


BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. of India signed a contract with the Philippines for an P18.9 billion ($369 million) shore-based anti-ship missile system, strengthening defense ties between the two countries embroiled in separate border disputes with China.

The deal entails the purchase of “the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles,” according to Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana in a statement. He believes it will help dissuade attempts to undermine Philippine sovereignty, particularly in the South China Sea.

As it struggles with China’s presence in disputed waters, the Southeast Asian nation has been working to upgrade its military. It purchased two warships from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. of South Korea last month. Ltd.
