Senator Manny Pacquiao has recently requested that SpaceX, a US-based space exploration company, construct a launchpad on Mindanao Island.

The senator met with SpaceX executives to discuss alternatives for cheaper internet in the country as well as the construction of a space launchpad in the country. According to him, the launchpad will aid the country in communications, weather monitoring, topography mapping, environmental protection, and research.

This will put the Philippines on the map of space exploration and provide thousands of employment for Filipino scientists, engineers, and workers, he said in a statement on Monday following a weekend meeting with top officials of the US-based Space Exploration Technologies Corp.

According to the boxing champion, who is running for president this year, the launchpad would not only serve their Asian clientele, but would also allow the Philippines to launch its own satellites for communications, weather monitoring, topography mapping, environmental protection, and research.

“The involvement of SpaceX in our country will not only bring in investments and jobs but will also put us at the forefront of space science,” Pacquiao said.

“Nakaka-excite ang possibility na ito at kung ano magagawa nito para sa bansa natin. (It is exciting to think about the possibility and what it could do for our country.),” the presidential aspirant said.

Aside from launchpad discussions, Pacquiao stated that if elected president, he would consider low-orbit satellites to provide affordable internet in the Philippines.

“This technology provides various uses such as advancing online learning, e-government services, and disaster relief and coordination, as well as linking our OFWs to their loved ones. Our future needs this technology,” Pacquiao said.

The senator also inquired about Musk’s other businesses doing business in the Philippines. Pacquiao mentioned that Tesla batteries might be utilized to modernize jeepneys and that the Boring Company could create a subway system to help decongest Metro Manila.

He also promised to establish a massive metro system in key Philippine cities if elected president. He also vowed to use Tesla batteries in electric cars to improve the country’s jeepneys.

Furthermore, Senator Koko Pimentel, a political ally, supported Sen. Pacquiao’s thoughts, stating that Mindanao is a suitable place for a spacecraft launchpad due to its proximity to the equator.
