The petitions urge Texas Governor Gregg Abbott to free the brothers and their friend who “may potentially spend the rest of their lives in prison for protecting their sister.”

According to reports, Alejandro and Christian Trevino became angry after learning of allegations their 42-year-old stepdad, Gabriel Quintanilla was abusing their 9-year-old half-sister. Pharr police said Quintanilla was wanted on charges of continuous sexual assault of a child, but the case involved another minor.

Alejandro Trevino, 18, Christian Trevino, 17, and Juan Eduardo Melendez, 18, a friend of the siblings, were detained in connection with the killing of Gabriel Quintanilla, 42.

Quintanilla was beaten with brass knuckles and thrown into the back of a truck, according to police. His body was discovered in a field outside McAllen, Texas.

The assault allegedly occurred after the Trevio brothers learnt that their sister had claimed Quintanilla had sexually touched her at an RV park. According to police, the brothers became upset and confronted Quintanilla, resulting in a physical altercation and many assaults.

Quintanilla sustained severe head damage, and officials believe he was still alive when the accused abandoned him in the field.

Quintanilla was wanted in an unrelated case for persistent sexual assault of a minor and attack family violence, according to police.

The three accused have been charged with severe assault and criminal activity. Melendez and Christian Trevino have also been charged with capital murder.

According to Hidalgo County records, the teenagers are each being jailed on a $1 million bail.

A petition posted on, calls on the state of Texas to release them.

“We ask that the state of Texas to release these teenagers, who could possibly spend the rest of their life in prison for protecting their sister,” wrote Carlos Eduardo, the man who started the petition.
