Marcos’ party lawyer wants Guanzon investigated, disbarred for DQ vote disclosure

The general counsel of presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s political party, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), is demanding that Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guazon be disbarred and her retirement benefits and lifetime pension be forfeited for allegedly prematurely and illegally disclosing her unfavorable vote against Marcos Jr. over her disqualification petition before the poll body.

Guanzon must be punished, according to PFP lawyer George Briones, “because of her premature disclosure or leak of her unpromulgated dissenting opinion.”

The party also asked the Comelec en banc to open an administrative probe on her “immediately” before her retirement benefits were released.

In the case of disbarment, the PFP attorney has yet to file the appropriate complaints with the Supreme Court or the Comelec for the administrative probe.

Guanzon did not write a dissenting opinion, but rather a distinct opinion because she did not reveal the votes of the other two commissioners on disqualification petitions.

In a GMA interview aired Thursday night, the Comelec commissioner revealed her vote.

Guanzon, according to Briones, “destroyed the reputation of the institution from which these money came.”

Guanzon also “publicly disclosed her minority opinion with undue haste before the submission of the other commissioners’ opinion,” according to Briones.

He claims her actions have placed her fellow commissioners “under a cloud of suspicion with her mere speculations that an unknown politician possibly intervened.” He calls it “pure hearsay” that the Supreme Court should “condemn as unworthy of a sitting commissioner.”

“A judge should abstain from making public comments as any pending or impending case and should require similar restraint on the part of the court personnel,” Briones said, citing the code of judicial conduct.

Briones also labeled Guanzon a “yellow,” the Liberal Party’s political color, for “openly siding” with Marcos Jr.’s opponent, Vice President Leni Robredo, “by her undue haste to come out with a decision.”

Guanzon, he added, was assigned to several government positions by the Aquinos, a family of politicians from the opposition party.

Briones claimed that she “should have inherited herself in these disqualification cases” against Marcos Jr.
