In a shocking incident outside SM City North Edsa in Quezon City, a security guard has been dismissed by mall management after allegedly throwing a puppy off a footbridge, resulting in its tragic death.
The incident came to light when a concerned netizen, Janine Santos, shared the distressing event on Facebook on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Santos, an apparent animal lover, provided a detailed account of how the security guard heartlessly threw the innocent puppy from the footbridge.
Santos’s passionate post read: “PATULONG PO!!!!!!!!!! UNG TUTA PO BINATO NUNG GUARD DITO SA SM NORTH!!!!!!!!!”
According to Santos, the guard was attempting to remove some street children, along with their dog, from the footbridge. When the children refused to leave, the guard allegedly callously tossed the dog off the bridge.
Outraged by the incident, Santos urged others to share her post to ensure that justice is served for the innocent puppy. It was evident from her heartfelt narrative that she had personally witnessed the incident.
A concerned pedestrian, who witnessed the tragic scene, immediately rushed to the aid of the injured puppy, but unfortunately, it did not survive the fall.
Several witnesses expressed their sympathy for the puppy, and Santos’s post gained significant attention from animal lovers, quickly going viral. The post included several photographs, capturing the security guard, wearing a face mask, throwing the puppy, another man confronting the guard, and a third person holding the motionless puppy.
Many individuals provided testimonies against the guard’s actions, while others tagged animal welfare organizations and relevant authorities. Offers of help poured in, and some individuals were able to identify the children who owned the puppy.
The viral post prompted SM City North Edsa to release an official statement on Wednesday, expressing deep sadness over the incident and extending condolences to the affected group.
The full statement from SM North Edsa reads: “With extreme sadness, we sympathize with the group of youngsters regarding the incident that happened outside our mall today. We have called the attention of the security agency to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter. The Security Guard has been dismissed and is no longer allowed to service any of our malls nationwide. As a pet-friendly establishment, we strongly condemn any acts that endanger or harm the lives of animals.”
The mall’s management was praised by many netizens for taking prompt action in response to the incident.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) intends to pursue legal action against the security guard for the harm caused to the puppy.
