Four-year-old Dutch boy takes mum’s car for spin

-

According to police in the Netherlands, a four-year-old boy drove his mother’s car before crashing into two parked cars.

Residents in Utrecht’s central city alerted police on Saturday after seeing a youngster walking down the street in only his pyjamas and bare feet.

"We immediately responded, as bystanders were worried that the boy was suffering from hypothermia," police posted on Instagram.

Officers received a second report of a car accident involving three cars as they arrived. The driver suspected of being the cause of the accident had vanished.

They claimed the car belonged to the boy’s mother.

Police phoned the mum "and when she spoke to her son, he made noises resembling a car and used gestures showing turning a steering wheel," police said.
"We then realised that the child may have been the driver."

The boy was reunited with his mother after a hot chocolate at the police station and some comfort from a teddy bear, according to police.

They accompanied police to the accident scene, where the boy took the keys, entered the vehicle, and started it — “and pressed down on the gas pedal,” according to police.

When his father went to work, the boy awoke and took his mother’s car keys “to go for a drive,” according to police.

The mother described her child as “quite resourceful,” and police advised the parents to keep their car keys hidden in the future.

“New Max Verstappen found in (the Utrecht suburb of) Overvecht,” police wrote on social media when reporting the incident, referring to the popular and current Dutch world champion Formula One driver.

“Fortunately, this mini driver’s adventure has come to an end with a sizzle,” the police wrote in their report.
