Filipino designer created Miss Universe Nigeria’s winning National Costume

Miss Nigeria Maristella Okpala won Best National Costume out of eighty lovely ladies who walked the 2021 Miss Universe stage.

In an eye-catching “Mmanwa” look inspired by a famous traditional masquerade of a southeastern tribe in Nigeria, the candidate stole the show.

A three-foot tribal mask with a colorful cape and colorful patterns and embellishments “portray the african dashiki, which offers a visual appeal and forms meant to invoke the ancestral spirits,” according to the ensemble.

Miss Universe Cameroon 2020 Kossinda Angeles wore the incredible “Lioness” ensemble designed by Filipino designer Kennedy Jhon Gasper at the last Miss Universe pageant.

The costume was made with African beads, stones, and crafts, according to Kennedy. “This costume pays attention to the strong will of women in attaining what ever height they want to attain, no matter the challenges faced while reaching their desired goals,” he wrote on Instagram.

Kennedy expressed his disbelief on Facebook by posting a photo of his Miss Nigeria creation.

"Thank you Lord!" He began crying out in gratitude.

"Hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala talaga. Umiiyak ako kanina habang kayakap si mama," he said, thanking everybody who took the time to congratulate him.

Harnaaz Sandhu of India was crowned Miss Universe 2021, with Miss Paraguay and Miss South Africa finishing first and second, respectively.

Bea Luigi Gomez, the Philippines’ proud bet, made it all the way to the Final 5, but fell short of the Top 3.
