Duterte is wooed by Roque to support Marcos

SENATORIAL Aspirant Harry Roque Jr. on Thursday urged his former boss, President Rodrigo Duterte, to support former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s presidential bid, reiterating the UniTeam’s message of healing and recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic by uniting socio-political divides.

Roque, Duterte’s former spokesman, believed that the President would give Marcos and his running mate, vice presidential candidate and Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, his complete support.

He viewed Marcos and Duterte-Carpio as a symbol of opposing political forces effort to find solutions to natural and man-made threats to the Philippines, such as the Covid-19 outbreak.

"The message of unity to recover from the pandemic is what cemented my belief in the UniTeam," Roque said in a statement.
"Our party runs the political gamut, but we have set aside previous political differences to work together," he added.

Duterte has openly criticized Marcos in the past, despite the fact that his running mate is the President’s daughter.

Even Marcos was dubbed a “weak leader” by Duterte at one point, and he backed Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go’s presidential bid, which he eventually dropped.

However, Roque speculated that the President, who is quite proud of Duterte-accomplishments, Carpio’s could find it difficult not to support his daughter’s personal choice.

He further noted that during the late president Corazon Aquino’s administration, Duterte served as officer-in-charge of Davao, “so the President, like me, was part of the anti-Marcos faction at some point.”

"Let us give President Duterte more time to decide on who to support in the May elections," Roque said.

"But I would like to believe that the President will not overlook the decision of Inday Sara to support Apo BBM as presidential running-mate," he added.

Duterte would soon campaign for the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan’s senate slate, according to Roque (PDP-Laban).

Roque, a member of the People’s Reform Party, has been endorsed as a candidate by both the UniTeam coalition and the PDP-Laban.

For this year’s elections, the PDP-Laban wing, which is supported by Duterte, has chosen Duterte-Carpio as its vice-presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, Roque encouraged critics of the administration not to politicize the outbreak.

"This is the time for unified action and not for divisive politics that only impede the country's socio-economic recovery," Roque said.

"As a former member of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), let me reassure our kababayans that the government is working non-stop to best manage the pandemic's changing risks and impacts," he added.
