Duterte considers increasing allowance for volunteer health workers

-

Metro Manila has been placed on Alert Level 3 from January 3 to January 15, 2022, as a result of an increase in COVID-19 cases in the country. Several cities in the capital region saw an increase in the number of coronavirus cases reported on a daily basis, prompting the government to tighten restrictions once more.

To prevent further spread of COVID-19, Metro Manila mayors agreed to temporarily restrict the movement of unvaccinated people. They are encouraged to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

Several hospitals in the capital region have already noticed an increase in COVID-19 cases. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte even wants to reach an agreement with the New People’s Army nurses (NPA).

He assured them that they would not be arrested if they went down and helped serve the Filipinos, and that the government would pay them.

Pres. Duterte would also like to increase the special risk allowance for volunteer health workers. According to an ABS-CBN News report, during a taped meeting with his cabinet officials, the 76-year-old Chief Executive asked how much the health volunteers were paid.

The special risk allowance for volunteer health workers is P5,000.00, according to Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III, but there are “criteria.” He stated that those receiving the aforementioned allowance are those in charge of attending to COVID-19 patients.

According to the report, Pres. Duterte stated that P5,000.00 is insufficient given the dangers that volunteer health workers face. In response to this, Health Sec. Duque concurred. The Chief Executive emphasized that the volunteers must approach the patients and treat them, which poses a significant risk on their part.

Duterte has stated that he intends to increase the special risk allowance for volunteer health workers. He did not specify the amount, but emphasized that they would be using government funds.
