Alert Level 1 may be until end of Duterte’s term — Duque

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — In the midst of talks to lift the alert level, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III stated that Alert Level 1 implementation could last until the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, but added that they were studying the possibility and future actions.

“Alert Level 1 muna tayo, malamang hanggang sa katapusan ng termino ng ating Pangulong Duterte. Pero of course, hindi naman ‘yan pinipigilan na pag-aralan na kung ano ba ang mga hakbangin sa hinaharap,” Duque said during the March 17 Laging Handa public briefing.

The priority, according to the health official, is to assist areas on Alert Level 2 in transitioning to Alert Level 1. Currently, 57 areas are on Alert Level 2 and have not strengthened their vaccination.

Duque stated that vaccination strategies are being strengthened in order to meet the government’s goal of fully vaccinating 90 million people.

Duque stated that they have yet to make a decision on the reported “Alert Level Zero,” but that it is too early for the country to lift policies requiring the use of face masks as protection against COVID-19.
